Science – Nurturing curiosity with an “I Wonder…” board

science

Curiosity is essential to any scientific endeavor. Fortunately, kids are naturally curious about the world around them, and we can easily build upon this foundation. One simple way to nurture this curiosity is to keep track of everyday questions through an “I Wonder…” board.

Our “I Wonder…” board is filled with questions from every member of the family. We post questions whenever we observe something out of the ordinary, or wonder how an everyday item works, or notice previously unnoticed details. Some questions have simple answers which can be found through reading, while others have complicated, or even unknown, answers. Some of these questions might be answerable by doing an experiment.

One key to writing down questions is to not worry about answering them now. The goal is not to come up with great research questions for your next science project (although you may), but to document the topics that peak your family’s curiosity.

Keeping an “I Wonder…” board is also an excellent chance for you, as a parent or teacher, to model the scientific practice of asking questions. When we first started our board, Ben and I would be the ones asking questions and posting them on the board. Then we began to restate the kids’ observations as questions and included them on the board. Now, when they come up with questions, we encourage them to write them down (or narrate to us) and post them. The kids are learning to ask their own questions and seeing the wonder of the world around them.

When the board starts to fill up, we move our post-it notes to a science notebook. I predict that these questions will be a great source for future science projects!

In case you’re wondering, here’s the list of questions on our board pictured above:

  • How do stars shine in the darkness? What are they like?
  • How do spiders cut the web when they are done?
  • Do hot drops of water run faster than cold drops?
  • Is the Angry Birds (a card game with dice) die fair? Does wild come up more often?
  • How many steps do we take a day?
  • Do some birds like muddy birdbaths better than clear ones?
  • Why don’t spiders get stuck in their own webs, but bugs do?
  • Do worms and jellyfish have mouths like other animals?
  • How does the amount of genetic change in plant reproduction compare to human reproduction?
  • Can we build a model of a neuron?
  • If metal utensils can cause a fire when microwaved, how is the inside of the microwave made of metal?
  • If you take all of the iron you eat in your lifetime, how big of an iron bar could you make?
  • Cottonwood trees seem to release more seeds during the daytime than during the nighttime. Is this true? If so, why?

Why You Should Get A Portable Jump Starter For Your Car

When you look at car accessories you might be confused between buying portable jump cables and a portable jump starter. While most people will opt for the cables because they know how to use them, you should consider the jump starter. There are many reasons why the starter is a much better option than the cables.

You Do Not Have To Wait For Help

If you are stuck because your battery is dead you do not want to wait around until someone comes along to help you start your car. With jump cables, you will have to wait as they attach your battery to the battery of another car. With a portable jump starter, you do not have to worry about this because the starter has enough power to jump the battery on its own. This not only makes the starter more convenient, but also safer should you be stuck in an unfamiliar area or at night.

You Do Not Have To Worry About How The Car Is Parked

If you have a jump starter you do not have to worry about how your car is parked. With jump cables, you have to ensure that your vehicle and the vehicle helping you are within a set range and able to connect properly. Most portable jump starters are small enough that they do not need large amounts of space to rest while you use them. This means that you never have to worry that your car is parked in a manner that does not enable help.

Fewer Chances Of Connection Issues

Jump starters have one set of connections which are applied to your car’s battery. This limits the chances of connection issues and simplifies the entire process. It is important that you know which terminal on your battery is the live one and which is the ground. When you know this you can easily set up the starter.

With jump cables, you have two sets of connections which increase the chances of something going wrong. There is also the chance that the battery you try to connect to is not as easy to use as your own. Setting up jump cables incorrectly could lead to injury or other problems with both vehicles.

Concerns About The Host Vehicle

When using jump cables you are assuming that the host vehicle will have enough power to start your car. In some cases, the host vehicle may have electrical components which are suspect and the attempted boost could damage them. Older vehicles may not have the power to jump a newer vehicle and you have to consider this.

This is something you will not have to worry about with a jump starter. This is due to the power supply being created for the sole purpose of jump starting your car. Jump starters vary in power and you should choose one which is able to jump your car.

There are a number of reasons why you should choose a jump starter over jump cables. These devices are portable and easy to use. You will also not have to worry about finding a suitable host vehicle to jump your battery.

Should You Choose Contacts, Eye Glasses Or LASIK Surgery?

Your personal preferences will be instrumental in deciding if you should choose contacts, eye glasses or LASIK. Your preferences should include budget, convenience, your lifestyle, visual appeal and comfort. However, before you make your choice, you should understand that one choice is not better than another one. All three offer their own unique sets of advantages and disadvantages. These advantages and disadvantages are based on eye health, simplicity of use and vision.

For example, eyeglasses offer some advantages of contact lenses. Eyeglasses are low maintenance and a person does not have to touch their eye in order to wear them. Glasses are also more cost effective because they do not have to be replaced as often as contacts.
Glasses can also be used as a fashion accessory and can help reflect the individual’s personality to the world.

However, contacts also offer some advantages over glasses. These advantages include:

• They do not obstruct vision (peripheral)
• You can change your eye color
• You can participate in activities without worrying about them breaking

LASIK surgery has its own distinct set of advantages. One of the most common reasons for individuals to choose this option is because of the noticeable and immediate improvement in vision. The results also last for a very long time.

So, which should you choose, eye glasses, contacts or LASIK? Once you know about the pros and cons of each, you will be able to make a more informed decision.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Eye Glasses

As previously discussed, one of the advantages of eye glasses is that you do not have to touch your eyes in order to improve your vision. This greatly reduces the risk of developing an eye infection.

Glasses also help protect the eyes from environmental hazards such as smoke, debris and dust.

There are some disadvantages to wearing eye glasses. Strong prescription glasses may have thicker lenses; some wearers believe the glasses will make their eye appear either magnified or smaller.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses provide a wider view because they are designed to fit the curve of the eyes. They will not clash with your clothing, so you can wear them with anything. You can also experiment with different eye colors by choosing different colored contacts.

Unfortunately, many people do not know how to apply contacts correctly. It is a simple technique that can be practiced so the problem can be rectified. Contacts can also decrease the amount of oxygen that is supplied to the eyes. As a result, the eyes can be dry, scratchy and irritated.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of LASIK

lasiksurgeryLASIK surgery also has its own set of pros and cons. In addition to improved vision, an individual will no longer have a need for eye glasses or contacts. Another benefit is that the results are immediate and recovery from the surgery is quick. Many patients are able to return to their normal schedule within a day or two unless they work in a dusty environment.

Although rare, there are some disadvantages to having LASIK. Some of these disadvantages are temporary discomfort and vision interruptions.

The final decision is up to you. Consider your lifestyle and preferences when deciding which vision improvement option to choose.
